SUMMARY:Walking the Hackney/Islington border from the Rosemary Branch to Old St
DESCRIPTION:This boundary walk between Hackney and Islington boroughs weaves around the areas either side of Regent’s Canal\, City Rd basin and City Rd \n\n\n\n‘Beating the Bounds’ to mark and confirm the borders between parishes is an ancient tradition\, where the border was literally paced out\, agreed and marked with stones each year. This is one in a series of walks exploring the borders of today’s Islington and Hackney boroughs\, looking at how these evolved over the centuries due to a mix of changing land ownership\, parish church catchments\, significance of early settlements and roads\, and natural features such as springs and ponds. \n\n\n\nThere’s a wealth of interest on either side of the border as we walk from the Regent’s Canal to the old boroughs of Finsbury and Shoreditch\, and the edge of the City in Moorfields. A varied mix of City Livery Company history\, ironworks\, canal basins\, WWII devastation\, the lost hospitals quarter\, a natural swimming pool and a mediaeval well. \n\n\n\nThis walk lasts for 2 – 2 1/4 hours and ends near Old Street station. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPre-book only please here.

SUMMARY:Clerkenwell's Mediaeval Monasteries
DESCRIPTION:In medieval times Clerkenwell was an area of fields on the outskirts of the City of London\, dominated by monastic institutions. The monasteries were all closed in the 1530s when Henry VIII broke with the Church of Rome but their buildings remained. Some were demolished but others were repurposed and rebuilt over the years; many of them still play a philanthropic and caring role today. \n\n\n\nOn this walk we will learn about a hospital that has provided healthcare on the same site for almost 900 years; London’s oldest parish church; a monastery that became an aristocratic Tudor mansion then an almshouse and school and remains an almshouse today; a priory with links to Jerusalem which gave its name to St John Ambulance eight hundred years later; and a nunnery which inspired the design of one of Clerkenwell’s newest buildings. \n\n\n\nThe walk will finish at the Clerk’s Well which gave the area its name; the site where parish clerks used to perform mystery plays in medieval times. \n\n\n\nNote: the walk does not include interior visits.  \n\n\n\nThe walk will last about 90 minutes and will start and finish near Farringdon Station. \n\n\n\n£9 – 12\, 90-minute rate for one of the regular rota walks offered by Islington Guided Walks\, also some concessions. Pre-book only\, please\, here.

SUMMARY:Clerkenwell Crime and Punishment
DESCRIPTION:Turbulent centuries of monasteries\, vengeance\, courthouses\, prisons\, murder\, social reformers\, a bomb plot and more…. \n\n\n\nClerkenwell lies just outside the old City\, originally the location of the monastic houses from the late 1100s. When Henry VIII siezed these in the 1500s\, some occupants met grim fates. Over the following centuries\, the population increased greatly as London grew and people came looking for work\, and in turn the area became overcrowded\, crime-ridden and squalid. As it lay outside the City’s direct jurisdiction (part of Middlesex)\, the area attracted radicals\, rebels and criminals. The local system of magistrates\, judges and parishes in turn built prisons\, courthouses and workhouses. \n\n\n\nThis walk explores the nature of crime and the various punishments meted out over the centuries in this fascinating area. \n\n\n\nPre-book only via Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:Dalston
DESCRIPTION:A ‘Walk Hackney’ event\, led by Sean Gubbins. \n\n\n\nAn ancient hamlet of Hackney\, Dalston developed\, east of the Roman’s Ermine Street\, from farm settlement to market gardening to brick fields to built-up suburbia by the 1860s. While still rural\, Dalston was home to smart big houses\, refuges for destitute women and infant orphans and a hospital for foreigners. Industrialisation brought the junction of two railways and factories. The diversity of today’s Hackney is reflected by the stalls of Ridley Road\, scene of post-war anti-fascist clashes. \n\n\n\nMore details here.

SUMMARY:A watery wander around the Angel Islington
DESCRIPTION:A circular walk from Angel tube\, exploring the influences of water sources. Islington and Clerkenwell developed around a hilly area with an abundance of water from natural springs\, wells and the River Fleet\, all now more or less hidden. The New River – an astonishing early 17C waterworks scheme with engineering and reservoirs – and the early 19C manmade Regent’s Canal and basins followed. Meanwhile\, some of the springs had been turned into risqué pleasure gardens and a famous theatre\, then the residential boom of Georgian and Victorian squares and streets sprung up. \n\n\n\nThis walk traces all things watery\, tells of an eccentric estate owner\, an evangelical Countess and a lost cricket ground. \n\n\n\nThe walk lasts 2 to 2 1/4 hours\, starts at the Angel station and ends in a historic market near the start. \n\n\n\nPre-book only via Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:De Beauvoir Town - royal hunting ground to 19C residential estate
DESCRIPTION:De Beauvoir lies in today’s London Borough of Hackney and is still sometimes called ‘Kingsland’ because Henry VIII hunted here. It is distinct from but nestled up close to Dalston\, London Fields\, the Regent’s Canal\, Shoreditch\, south east Islington and Mildmay. It is also known locally as ‘the jam between the Islington and Hackney sandwich’! \n\n\n\nThis walk explores the origins of the area\, including a grand manor house from the 1600s which eventually became a ‘mad house’\, then legal wrangles leading to extensive 19C residential development of pretty streets and a stunning square. We will also hear of lost churches\, a canal basin with wharves that supplied much of the building material for today’s houses\, a factory powered by tall windmills\, the significance of horse stabling and much more. \n\n\n\nNumbers are limited\, so please pre-book only on Eventbrite\, and be aware that Covid-related requirements may still change at short notice. \n\n\n\nThe walk will start at Haggerston Station\, last 2 – 2 1/4 hours and end near the canal and Southgate Road.

There is also a second date for this walk\, on Wednesday 6th April and on the same booking link. \n\n\n\nThe walk will start at Haggerston Station\, last 2 – 2 1/4 hours and end near the canal and Southgate Road.
