SUMMARY:Clerkenwell Crime and Punishment
DESCRIPTION:Turbulent centuries of monasteries\, vengeance\, courthouses\, prisons\, murder\, social reformers\, a bomb plot and more…. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nClerkenwell lies just outside the old City\, originally the location of the monastic houses from the late 1100s. When Henry VIII siezed these in the 1500s\, some occupants met grim fates. Over the following centuries\, the population increased greatly as London grew and people came looking for work\, and in turn the area became overcrowded\, crime-ridden and squalid. As it lay outside the City’s direct jurisdiction (part of Middlesex)\, the area attracted radicals\, rebels and criminals. The local system of magistrates\, judges and parishes in turn built prisons\, courthouses and workhouses. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis walk explores the nature of crime and the various punishments meted out over the centuries in this fascinating area. The route is roughly circular so we will start and end near Farringdon Station – allow 2 hours +. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore details and booking on Eventbrite here

SUMMARY:Historic Holborn
DESCRIPTION:Explore the hidden histories either side of busy High Holborn – Hatton Garden\, Leather Lane\, inns of law and chancery and ancient churches. \n\n\n\nHigh Holborn was originally a westward path up from a crossing over the River Fleet\, leading through green fields and connecting the mediaeval City to Westminster. The areas to either side featured bishop’s palaces\, the first church of the Knights Templar\, legal inns and ancient markets. Later\, smart residential enclaves developed\, then coaching inns\, industry\, jewellery and diamond trades thrived\, followed by extreme poverty and slums\, contrasted with Victorian temples of commerce. \n\n\n\nMore recent rejuvenation now sits by side by side with much of the old fabric of the area\, including several Grade I listed buildings. We explore them all on this wander through the alleyways and green spaces at the south-east boundary of today’s Camden borough. \n\n\n\nPre-booking essential – please click here.

SUMMARY:Clerkenwell's Lost Monasteries
DESCRIPTION:Visit the sites of four great monasteries which dominated Clerkenwell for hundreds of years and have left their mark to this day. \n\n\n\nThis year Bart’s Hospital is celebrating its 900th anniversary on the same site that it was founded in 1123. It was originally part of St Bartholomew’s Priory\, founded by a courtier of Henry 1 in thanks for surviving a bout of malaria while on pilgrimage to Rome. St Bartholomew’s was only one of four great religious houses in Clerkenwell that flourished for hundreds of years until Henry VIII closed them down. Come and see what is left of these once rich and influential monasteries and hear their stories – including the priors who lost their heads\, the monks who went to war and the secret tunnels. Three of the Priories – St Bartholomew’s\, The Charterhouse and the Order of St John – have a flourishing legacy to this day. Our tour does not go inside the surviving buildings but there are free museums that you can visit at both The Charterhouse and St John’s Gate and both also offer guided tours of their historic interiors. The tour meets at Farringdon Tube station. It takes about two hours and finishes with a visit to the Clerk’s Well which gave Clerkenwell its name. \n\n\n\nBooking link here – choose September 30th in the drop down if you would like me to be your guide. Other dates will be led by equally qualified and charming Islington Guides!

SUMMARY:Clerkenwell's Mediaeval Monasteries
DESCRIPTION:In medieval times Clerkenwell was an area of fields on the outskirts of the City of London\, dominated by monastic institutions. The monasteries were all closed in the 1530s when Henry VIII broke with the Church of Rome but their buildings remained. Some were demolished but others were repurposed and rebuilt over the years; many of them still play a philanthropic and caring role today. \n\n\n\nOn this walk we will learn about a hospital that has provided healthcare on the same site for almost 900 years; London’s oldest parish church; a monastery that became an aristocratic Tudor mansion then an almshouse and school and remains an almshouse today; a priory with links to Jerusalem which gave its name to St John Ambulance eight hundred years later; and a nunnery which inspired the design of one of Clerkenwell’s newest buildings. \n\n\n\nThe walk will finish at the Clerk’s Well which gave the area its name; the site where parish clerks used to perform mystery plays in medieval times. \n\n\n\nNote: the walk does not include interior visits.  \n\n\n\nThe walk will last about 90 minutes and will start and finish near Farringdon Station. \n\n\n\n£9 – 12\, 90-minute rate for one of the regular rota walks offered by Islington Guided Walks\, also some concessions. Pre-book only\, please\, here.
